If you’re like most parents these days, then one thing you may worry about is how much time your children can spend staring at a screen. In the US, the average screen per day hits seven hours and three minutes, which leaves little time to enjoy the best that nature has to offer. While there is no doubt that continuous connectivity and online-based learning are here to stay, there is also something to be said for the benefits of being outdoors. Study after study has shown that engaging in nature boosts kids’ memory and attentiveness. Kids who play outside have also been found to be happier and less anxious than those who are indoors all day. One great way to get kids excited about the Great Outdoors is through travel. Perhaps you’ve booked a family trip to New Jersey (NJ) and you’re excited about activities like visiting Thomas Edison National Historical Park, the Atlantic City Boardwalk, or Six Flags Great Adventure. If so, aim to leave at least an hour a day for free play outdoors.
Gardens and Butterflies
Kids benefit greatly from unstructured play in nature, with studies showing it improves their motor skills, balance, and coordination, and strengthens their muscles and bones. Free play in the midst of nature’s beauty also boosts a child’s cognitive abilities and creativity, and enhances their social and emotional growth. Just a few places you can take your kids to where they can jump, climb, run, and play include Shark River Park (with its hiking trails and playgrounds), Cattus Island County Park (with wetlands and a gorgeous butterfly garden), and Allaire State Park (with steam trains, hiking trails, and a playground). Both Shark River Park and Allaire State Park are located in Wall Township, while Cattus Island is situated in Toms River.
Taking the Plunge
If you are visiting NJ in the peak of summer, then it’s all about water. Many Jersey City hotels have family-friendly, water-based amenities like indoor pools and kids’ clubs with water games, which is a great way for kids to freshen up after a full day’s sightseeing. Of course, NJ has a significant amount of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and it also borders the Delaware River to the west and southwest, and the Hudson River to the northeast. This means that New Jersey has a mix of oceanfront and riverfront areas. For family-friendly fun under the sun, consider visiting the pristine beaches and natural dunes of Island Beach State Park. You can also go canoeing and kayaking in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, or visit Liberty State Park, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Manhattan.
A Charge of Adrenalin
If your family is adventure-loving, there are so many outdoor activities that can get your heart racing. One of these is whale-watching. Simply take a cruise from the Jersey Shore to watch whales and other marine life. For older kids and those keen to take it up a notch, try zip lining in Cape May. You can also enjoy hiking and biking in NJ’s numerous state parks, such as Colonial Park, Double Trouble State Park, or Winding River Park. Jackson Jungle Play Park & Children's Trail in Jackson Township has a unique wooden jungle gym and playground, which are ideal for younger kids.
New Jersey is a state with excellent offerings for culture vultures. However, it is also an ideal spot for families wishing to spend time outdoors. From hiking all the way to kayaking and canoeing, there are myriad activities that will make for a unique outdoor bonding experience for family members of all ages.
