To understand the "sustainable" part of my craft, you will be interested to learn what is in commercial chalk paint. Annie Sloan, the best commercial brand, in my opinion, is full of ingredients, but it is considered low toxic. The smell is much like any artist's paint, but mild. Making your own chalk paint requires three ingredients: baking soda, acrylic paint, and water. The smell is extremely mild.
To make homemade chalk paint, use 1 cup latex or acrylic paint, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 3-4 tablespoons of water. Combine the paint and water. Stir well. Add the baking soda and stir until thickened and well blended. The consistency should be that of shampoo. This paint works best on craft projects versus furniture. When your paint dried, you can spray it with a paint sealer. I don't do this for my craft projects that are for a single season. Like this vase, it will be used for a few weeks leading up to Easter, then I will wash it and put it away for another craft. So I won't be sealing it.
Use a wide brush (1") and paint the jar. Let it dry thoroughly! You can add a second coat, but only after the paint is completely dry. If you try to paint on wet paint, it comes right off your brush, leaving a bare spot on your jar. Once completely dry, seal it if you are going to!
