My husband and I had the opportunity to visit the Blue Ridge Parkway during the fall season. Our visit was near the end of October (2021) and the color was just beginning to pop. The section we visited was the one close to Asheville, North Carolina, about 15 minutes away.
The first stop for us was at Tanbark Ridge, where we stopped to watch the sunrise. The elevation is around 3175 feet. The first person to measure the elevation in the Smokies was George Masa in the early 1900s. He was also instrumental in naming the peaks, valleys, and trails in the area.
Our next stop was Bull Creek Valley, elevation 3483, where we stopped to admire the view.
We were on Black Mountain, part of the southern Appalachian Mountains. This is where we spotted many red maples, sumac, sugar maples, spruce, fir, beech, buckeyes, and hickory trees. The highest spot we got to was 3890 and was Lane Pinnacle.
We were in a lot of "smoke," the dense fog that surrounds the Blue Ridge Parkway and gives the name to the Smoky Mountains. We did see Craggy Gardens and Pisgah National Forest. This parkway was the first automobile road through the Smokies (1922.)
Amazing. I just love the fall colors. I need to visit one day.
