Four Reasons to Own a Horse

Were you ever the kid that grew up dreaming of horses? So many children do, especially after seeing stories like Black Beauty growing up. Horses are not an easy hobby to have, and owning your own one isn't particularly cheap, either. The good news is that there are plenty of benefits to your involvement with horses, and they benefit people of all ages. If you are in the seriously privileged position of being able to own your own horse, then you need to know why it’s so beneficial for you.

Before you decide to go ahead and buy a horse of your own, you need to know that they do take a lot of looking after. From ensuring you have the right sliding horse stall doors to the right space for them to eat and sleep, your dabble in horse ownership cannot be slack. Horses are big animals, not like rabbits or cats. They take a lot of work and you need to pay attention to them. So, with this in mind, here are four reasons you should look into horse ownership.

  • There are so many physical benefits to owning a horse. It’s a workout to ride a horse and the energy it takes to clean and muck out horses is also a workout. Walking out to a barn, grooming and lifting the saddles are all a workout, and even if you don't want to ride your horse, the act of cleaning out the barn is often enough of a workout to make the physical benefits worth it!

  • There are so many social events that involve horses, which means that your mental health will be helped greatly simply by being involved in these events. Horses can provide you with an outlet for reducing your stress and improving your mood, too, and these things can go a long way to improving your mental health. They’re a therapy that you didn't know that you needed, and are always worth your time. If you live alone, then being in the presence of your horse can be enough of a motivator and social benefit to keep your horse happy for as long as possible. There are thousands of clubs for horse owners, too.

  • Being able to reduce your stress is so important in life, and horses can contribute to that stress reduction. Interacting with animals is often cited as one of the best ways to feel good. You know how calming it is to have a purring cat on your chest, and horses are one animal that offers people the chance to be calm and reduce their stress. We live in a busy world, so taking yourself out of the towns and cities in favor of the space of the fields and countryside can make all the difference.

  • The boost to your mood, feeling as if you are looking after another living thing is often so worth it when it comes to getting a horse. You can bet that your interaction with horses is going to make a difference to your life. Why not look into buying your own?
