Get your cooling system ready
One of the things that you will want to make sure is in tip-top shape is your cooling system. If it hasn’t been serviced for a while, then now is the time. You don’t want to get to the height of summer and it gives up on you! Proper air conditioner maintenance goes a long way to helping your AC last much longer, and it can reduce the risk of fire from air conditioners.
Check your guttering
The gutters around your house need to be checked from time to time, as they can get blocked and full of things like leaves and dirt. If water can’t drain properly through the guttering, then it can lead to blockages and water damage; even flooding. If you do get water damage, then you can look into water damage restoration to help you, but prevention is better than cure, right? So check your gutters to check that they are flowing well and that there aren’t any blockages.
Check your attic and basement
Now is a good time to check your attic and basement for things like mildew, leaks, pests, and any holes that are in the roof. Although spring and summer are a time when there tends to be less rain, you don’t want to leave any problems that could lead to leaks. Pests need to be controlled as soon as they are spotted, as they can become much more of a problem as the temperatures rise. In your basement, it is a good idea to also check for pests, as well as mold and any mildew, which can be common in basements. It is bad for your health if left out of control.
Give your deck a once-over
This is something that is a must for summer! You will want to check your decking area or patio, to make sure that there is nothing that is broken, and for decking, you want to make sure that it isn’t rotting. If there are loose nails, then get them fixed. You could also take this time to repaint any areas outside, or seal up any areas of the decking that could do with a little care. Checking for puddles and water resistance on decking is a good idea too. If water is seeping into the wood, then it could mean that the decking needs to be protected against water, which can be something you can do yourself with a varnish or sealant.
