Focus on being comfortable in your home.
Hygge wants you to be happy, positive, and comfortably cozy. Bring winter decor into your home (it doesn’t have to just be Christmas themed!). Think soft blankets for the couch and chairs, fuzzy rugs, and bring in white candles. When it’s winter outside, I like to add greenery inside to make it feel more “warm.” Succulents and eucalyptus plants are the best to do this!
Invite friends and family over.
It may be too cold to enjoy the outdoors, but why not celebrate inside? Spending quality time with others is a major part of hygge. Have a casual dinner party or get-together with movies or games. You could set up a hot chocolate bar or a charcuterie board. Celebrate the new year together and share your hopes for the future.
Cook more comfort food.
Winter is perfect for cooking and baking especially your favorite comfort foods. Whether you want to bake cookies and pies or savory dishes like casseroles, winter is the best for warm and cozy soups and sweet treats. A few of my favorite winter recipes are Irish Potato Soup and Six Can Chili. A winter cocktail we like to serve is this cranberry prosecco punch. Share with friends!
Christmas may be over, but you can still add simple string lights to create a calmer environment in your home.
I would love to hear how you invite winter and hygge into your home this season. Do you decorate seasonally or light winter candles? The key is to spend more time together as a family while staying warm and cozy. Try hygge this winter (and every season!) for a fuller life.
Use essential oils.
Use an essential oil diffuser to fill your home with winter scents. We like peppermint since it adds a fresh scent to our home during the cold season. Sweet orange is another oil that is refreshing for winter, and Frankincense is a go-to essential oil for winter since it has health benefits! You can also put out potpourri if you would like a long-lasting smell without a lot of fuss.
(or get one!). If you have a fireplace, be sure to use it. It adds ambiance during the winter that leads to that hygge feeling. If you don’t have a fireplace, look for an indoor fireplace on sale! Some indoor fireplaces also double as lights or heaters, so you have a lot of flexibility for transforming your space into your very own winter wonderland. When the fireplace is going, our family tends to gravitate toward it leading to more togetherness. Cozy up under blankets for a movie or to read a book.

ReplyDeleteI had no idea that's what that means! It's funny though we moved into our new home two weeks before Christmas and we've been working really hard to get the things we want and putting it all together and just yesterday we both looked around and smiled and we said, "I love it at the exact same time. I've never seen him look more relaxed than he has since we moved in. Now I have a name for that feeling!
