Ever since I was a young girl, I have been fascinated by books about America and how other Americans lived. Lois Lenski and Laura Ingalls Wilder influenced this fascination with their stories. I love reading about how life was different. I especially love food scenes and the way they dressed, and how they talked.
Regina Scott has a way of describing her characters that fills that need for me that I developed as a child. The food scenes could be revved up for me, but her character development is wonderful. You can imagine my delight with the cover of this book. Look how intriguing this is, with a woman in period costume with a CAMERA. Be still my heart.
I found myself looking things up more than normal in this book. What is a lemonade berry, anyway? What did those cameras really look like when they were set up? What did coating the glass plate entail? Plus, we are talking an extensive vocabulary and I love learning new words.
The book is labeled Christian fiction, but don't let that turn you off. The characters in this book use religion as they did back in the day. The author has done her homework in regards to how people in this era talked about religion. I found it an intriguing part of the book's authenticity.
I loved that the setting was with an army exploration party. Think about seeing the Grand Canyon for the very first time! Mapping it, and capturing its beauty for others to see makes me feel giddy with excitement.
