Our resort has a couple of cooking classes, one for paella and one for sangria, that we took advantage of while we were there. I feel like cooking is a way to get right into the culture. I'm sharing my experiences with you about sangria now, but paella will come later!
We learned that the goal of a good sangria is to be clear. Even if the sangria is red, you should be able to look through it. You want to see all that luscious fruit! So all the liquids should also be clear as well.
You can control the amount and what kinds of fruit that you want to use. Some use only citrus, and others use a combination of fruit like our chef did, whatever the case, make it your own!
The sugar to macerate the fruit can be left out completely. Also, you can use a diet soda to reduce the sugars further. The Rioja is a Spanish red wine grown in the Rioja region. We didn't get to visit this area as it is much further north than we traveled.
