Last week I wasn't feeling like myself, I was tired, and achy, with a nagging cough and a sore throat (probably due to all the coughing.) I take enough meds for all the things I have "wrong" with me already, so adding more chemical into my body wasn't what I wanted to do. The main problem was my cough, so I looked for cough syrup recipes and found this one and decided to make it, with the addition of a little lemon.
Homemade Cough Syrup
1/2 c fresh lemon juice (I had frozen lemon juice from this adventure)
1 c local honey
2 T freshly chopped sage
Combine in a pot on the stove. Cook until boiling, turn off heat, cover and rest for 10 minutes. Strain out the sage leaves. Pour into a clean jar. Store in the refrigerator. Give 2 teaspoonsful as needed.
This stuff works. I took the first dose at 8:30 in the morning and didn't cough once until 11:30. This was with an annoying, hacking cough. It helped me rest which helped me feel better.
I wanted to share it with anyone like me who is looking for a natural product to help with a cough. I'm not a doctor, and can't say that it is a miracle coughing medicine, but it worked for me!
Do you use any other home remedy for coughing?

I use a homemade cough recipe that I like and it helps, but haven't seen or tried this one. Being able to store in the refrigerator is good that way it stays good longer, unlike the version I've made. I will have to give this one a try. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI admire your creativity! I always get one really bad cold every year, and my coughs never seem to go away. I'll have to save this for my inevitable coughing attacks down the road!
ReplyDeleteWow - homemade cough syrup? You are talented, lady! Like - I would never think of preparing this at home. I'm intrigued, however...and may give it a go because I hate taking so many chemicals when colds arrive!
ReplyDeleteI am going to copy this recipe down. My grandmother used to make something with lemon and honey but I have no idea what proportions she used of if it had any herbs in it. Thanks!!!xo Diana

ReplyDeleteAs a Pharmacist's wife, I can say he'd recommend this. If you can soothe a little cough or sore throat on your own- more power to you! But those flu like symptoms are something else, lol. I hope none of us get the flu this year!
ReplyDeleteNo way!!! I'm definitely saving this for the next time my throat is hurting or I have a cough. Not only is this healthier but Halls are expensive!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I've never tried homemade cough remedies and it would be nice to know how to make one in case! Thanks for this recipe, I'm definitely going to keep it.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool, and something I'm definitely going to have to try! Thank you for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteI love this! As a kid my grandma made all our cough syrup and would bring it over when we were sick. I really regret never asking her how she did it or for a copy of her recipe because it was awesome. I will be trying this one! - Jeanine

ReplyDeleteThis is interesting! I never thought of sage before. I use raw apple cider vinegar and local honey.
ReplyDeleteI never even thought of making my own cough syrup. What a great idea! My dad swears by a concoction of honey, lemon juice, hot water and apple cider vinegar and, while it tastes disgusting, it certainly works!!!
ReplyDeleteMy homemade cough remedy is similar to yours. I got it from my grandma. Honey really makes such a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to bookmark this! I love natural remedies!
ReplyDeleteOmg I will have to pin this!!!! I'm all about using more natural options when I'm feeling under the weather.

ReplyDeleteI have never tried making my own cough syrup, but I love the idea. It is a healthier alternative opposed to most of the cough syrups sold at the stores.
ReplyDeleteI'm already starting to feel the effects of the back to school germs. I hope I can stave off being sick this whole winter but I love the idea of making homemade cough syrup if it gets its hooks in me.
ReplyDeleteI will have to keep this in mind! Pregnancy has given me lots of reasons to find homemade remedies that are safe. It's a habit I want to continue even after our baby is born!
ReplyDeleteFunny I just bought a jar of raw honey and said I am going to find holistic ways to use it. I have all 3 ingredients definitely will be making sure to put it to use if I need to.
ReplyDeleteI have never made my own cough syrups or anything for that matter. Maybe I need to give something like this a try. I hate paying for the medicines they sell at the store.
ReplyDeleteWe always try to use things with natural ingredients, so something like this would be great. With kids in the house you have to be mindful of what you give them.
