Frugal Luxuries #1

Each Saturday I would like to post a way for us to find a fulfilling life, no matter how much money we have.

I was told about a book called Frugal Luxuries by Tracey McBride. It was published in 1997 by Bantam Books. I plan to share with you her ideas (and some of my own) on how to "enhance your life and comfort your soul" regardless of the status of your income!

You are the caretaker of your own happiness! What things make you happy? One luxury I have is our herb garden. Each winter I plan what herbs I want to plant, where I want them to go and how I will use them. This planning stage is the luxury of my herb garden, as is the eating of it in the summer! Here is a beginning stage of my herb garden planning...

Can you find a small piece of earth, even tucked in among your flowers, to plant one of your favorite herbs? Herbs love pots, too, and that would be a great start! My first herb garden was a giant terra cotta pot filled with basil, sage and thyme! It looks beautiful, and smells great and is so much fun to care for!!

  1. Ooooh...I love this type of planning.

    Your cursive is gorgeous too.

We have plans to put a small veggie garden in between our house and Warren's Mom's. I'll have to be sure to get some herbs in there.

  2. Hi, Terri, oh I like the idea of frual luxuries! sounds good to me.

I left a message in the post comments on further instructions for the ball wreath & answered your questions, so you might want to go take a look. I hope you'll make one too! It was very easy.

  3. Yes, I love to plan my garden, but I get to wait just a bit longer than you because your garden must go in long before mine can...I have to wait until after Memorial Day. Sometimes, I begin planning as early as February. I have a household journal that I use with a section for gardening. It has all the names of my plants and my past plans.

Great idea, Terri! This sounds as if it will be a lot of fun.

  5. Bless you Terri, for the nice words, you are so kind. I LOVE your herb garden plan!! Thank you so much for sharing it. You've inspired me to get started planning a little kitchen garden...with lettuces and sorrel...for spring!
    Thanks again.
    Warmly,
    Tracey

    P.S. I love your blog!!

  6. I miss having a garden to plan. Since we moved to the city we can't get anything to grow very well. It is so relaxing to plan. Now I just plan diy remodels for the house. I love tearing down walls and remaking the layout...my poor husband wishes I would stop thinking of new things for us to do.
I look forward to your Sat frugal posts.

    Hi Terri
We were just talking about planting herbs indoors. We think the breakfast room windows would be the perfect spot. J's orchids love those windows.

Just wondering if you saw any Eagles this weekend. I saw one flying, when we were driving into Osage Beach, Thursday.

  10. What a wonderful way to spend the Winter...and how good they will each taste!
I love herbs and have grown some in pots. When I try to grow them in the garden the rabbits get to them before I do! This year we even had a deer wander in to much. : ) Of course they also chew on the hostas and trees and everything!

I have been thinking about trying some indoors in pots...: )

A frugal luxury idea sounds perfect!

    Love,
    Sue

  12. Your own sweet patch of earth. The only thing I can get to grow in Arizona is lavender and rosemary.
